Prison Chaplain

Job Summary: The Prison Chaplain provides spiritual guidance, pastoral care, and religious support to inmates of all religious backgrounds within the correctional facility. The Chaplain plays a key role in fostering a rehabilitative environment by addressing the spiritual needs of incarcerated individuals. This role requires a compassionate, non-judgmental, and empathetic approach to ministry, along with a strong understanding of the challenges of the correctional environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide spiritual counseling and support to inmates, addressing individual needs and concerns in a confidential and empathetic manner.
  • Will be expected to work on a close-knit team of instructors, social workers, and correctional officials.
  • Basic paperwork and strict following of SOP’s is required.
  • Lead religious services, worship, and prayer groups, catering to various faith traditions and denominations within the facility.
  • Develop and deliver religious education and spiritual enrichment programs, following a preset      curriculum.
  • Offer grief counseling, crisis intervention, and emotional support for inmates facing personal or family challenges.
  • Liaison between the facility and religious organizations outside, facilitating opportunities for religious volunteers, donations, or partnerships.
  • Work closely with correctional officers, administrators, and other staff to create a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for spiritual growth.
  • Maintain accurate records of services provided, counseling sessions, and any relevant interactions with inmates, ensuring confidentiality and adherence to facility protocols.
  • Participate in facility meetings and multidisciplinary team discussions to support the overall wellbeing of inmates.
  • Stay informed of current prison policies, security protocols, and cultural awareness to adapt spiritual care services accordingly.

Qualifications:

  • Ordained or credentialed clergy with a recognized religious denomination or faith tradition.
  • Previous experience in pastoral care, counseling, or chaplaincy in a correctional or similar setting is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to relate effectively to individuals from diverse backgrounds and faiths.
  • Knowledge and understanding of correctional facility operations, including security and behavioral management.
  • Ability to work independently, manage a diverse caseload, and maintain emotional resilience in a challenging environment.
  • A deep commitment to ethical practices, confidentiality, and respecting the dignity of all individuals.
